A SNP panel checks around 200,000 pre-selected positions in the genome — like sampling a few dozen pixels of a photo and trying to reconstruct the whole image. It's limited to variants already catalogued, so it misses novel mutations and breed-specific rare variants entirely.

Epilepsy in the Alaskan Malamute is almost always labeled idiopathic. That word means the cause is unknown, not that there is no cause. In one family we examined, both parents tested clear on the standard commercial panel, and affected puppies were born anyway. Whatever is behind it lies outside what today's panels look for. We are searching for it with 30x whole-genome sequencing, which reads every base instead of checking a fixed list of known positions.

What you should know upfront
- דרושים גם כלבים בריאים. קבוצת השוואה בריאה חיונית למחקר בדיוק כמו הכלבים החולים.Healthy dogs are needed too. A healthy comparison group is as essential to the study as the affected dogs.
- נדרש תיעוד וטרינרי. בלי דוח רופא לא ניתן לסווג כלב כחולה, וסיווג שגוי פוגע בכל המחקר.Veterinary documentation is required. Without a veterinarian's report a dog cannot be classified as affected, and one wrong classification weakens the entire study.
